We supplied food to the children of Lake County again this year. This much-needed 9-week program tackles hunger insecurities during the weeks when school is not in session. Last year, more than 2,900 children were able to have 3 each of breakfast, lunch, fruit, snacks and drinks. This year there will be more than 3,000 children enrolled in the program.
They received food through the generosity of Real Life Church of Mount Dora. Youth Pastor Alex Caban orchestrated a packing event which was held on June 3rd at the church. They packed enough for 750 children to received 2 weeks’ worth of breakfast, lunch, snacks and juice. Lake Cares supplied the boxed milk, additional juice and fresh fruit. The food is handed out each Friday from 9 to 11 with the help of many Lake Cares and Real Life Church volunteers. Real Life Church had a 2nd event planned in July to pack another 750 boxes for the remainder of the summer.
Lake County has 17 schools that are “Tier 1” schools. These schools have 70% or more children receiving free or reduced lunches throughout the school year. In many cases school hours are the only time the children get to eat. Parents will picked the food up at Lake Cares Food Pantry. With the generosity of all supporters and the help of the volunteers, this program will be true to Lake Cares Food Pantry mission statement. “Feeding the Body, Educating the Mind, and Lifting the Spirit of All Individuals.”
